Hi guys,

Currently I do some dev. work for clients who have requested my services for their web development needs by providing them with a child portal at my development location.

I do this because the customers I work for often already have their own domain names and an existing site.

I want to be able to take the dev. work I do in their child portals and make that site their new site.  The new site would be on a different database, completely new portal, etc.

How would I transfer the existing child portal to be the Parent/Only portal on a new DNN Install somewhere else?

Thanks!
Vollerworld

In your portal settings under the Host tab:

1. add the root site as an additional alias i.e. you will have both www.mypartentportal.com/childportal_01 and www.childportal_01.com as portal aliases (click "add an http alias" at the bottom of the the Hosts/Portals page and add the root URL of the site - www.childportal_01.com)

2. In your HOSTING control panel, set up a domain alias on your root site.  www.myparentportal.com should also be aliased to www.childportal_01.com.  You may have to delete the site (or at least de-activate it) if you already have it set up as a primary site on the same host.

Some hosting companies do not provide the ability to set up domain aliases, others will limit the number you can have.  Check with your hosting company.  There should be a FAQ or Knowledgebase article re: domain aliases.

3. If the site is currently hosted with a different host, you will have to change the Nameserver settings with your registrar.

Ok, so before transfer, I add the new domain to the Alias list for this particular portal.  Got that.

On the new hosting account (with my hosting company -- and no they don't allow aliases so I actually have to have separate setups for each domain) I will already have DNN installed and using the correct domain name as a portal alias.
My question is not so much about Web Hosting as it is about DNN in particular.  I've got the ability to repoint the domain to new name servers, I'm ready to go there.  I'm just not sure how to get a child portal from one location to become the primary portal at another location altogether.

Assuming DNN is already set up at this point, what do I do?  Do I have to restore the existing database from its current location to the new location?  Where do I transfer all of the files in the existing portal to in the DNN directories on the new portal?

Should I just copy everything like I would if I were moving a parent portal?  But I DON"T want to move all that data and all the other child portals.

I am not sure exactly how you would move just a child portal to another DNN installation.  I think that there are utilities for that kind of move available on Snowcovered.  If I were faced with this, I think I would duplicate the whole installation, all files and the database,  on the new host, then deletethe portals that I did not want.  The primary one might be portal 6 insted of portal 0, but that should not matter.  As far as domain aliases go, having a separate setup for each domain kind of defeats the whole purpose of DNN.  You may need a separate license for any 3rd party modules and updates, etc would be a real PIA.
