Well, like Joe pointed out earlier in this thread, I can't speak officially for the project, but I can tell you from past experience that there is not a lot of planning done on future releases.  There is a question in the benefactors forums on what was being considered for 4.6, but so far it has gone unanswered.

I think if you look back on Joe's responses here you can see that it is a struggle to just get everything together for a small stabilization release with one small enhancement (SSL).

It's gradually getting better though, so I hope I don't come across as too critical.  As a matter of fact I have probably already said enough to bring the wrath of Joe, so I'll stop here.

Oh, one other thing that I will mention is that Alex Shirley aka NukeAlex has really helped to make an improvement in Gemini reporting and the rest of the team have been good about getting that number of bugs to it's current level.  One reason you see 800 is because a lot of cleanup has been done and moving to the internal core gemini project.  Even though it is 800, most of those are not anywhere near critical.

Hi Brian,

Yes, I can tell you that it won't release by Friday 13th like I originally guessed. :)

The latest ( RC3 ) added a couple fields to the SSL settings so that you can specify a secure url in case you want to share a certificate with other portals.  I think doing that is a bad practice and I hope people don't take it seriously that they should share an SSL certificate across domains.

If you are are thinking about implementing SSL then you should get your own SSL certificate, otherwise what kind of message are you sending to people that use your site?

I agree that the ability to share a SSL certificate across domains could be abused and considered bad practice. But having the option of doing so is a great feature, IMO.

Case in point:

I am doing a portal for a customer at the moment. It is one DNN installation, with the main portal being their corporate site, then two child portals which are seperate product line sites. In the next 6 months or so, that number could increase to four, with two of them being turned into parent portals possibly.

All one installation, all one company. It would make perfect sense in this scenario for them to be able to use one SSL certificate across their different domains if it were possible and available as an option.

Looks like you were only 8 days late John!

Generally, for a decent size business, yes I always get my customer their own ssl cert.   However, for a very small family business, I have used shared ssl certs provided by my shared host.   I think there are cases for each.. and actually a good thing to provide.

Well, 6:30am and I have to get a project done so I can enjoy the weekend.

Good luck with 4.5.4 ..
