Hi - the only DNN module capable of doing basic news content publishing, with potential workflow added in, and it not just linking to content, but housing the actual news item (announcement item, in the announcement list --> links to the news item on a DNN page)... is the Announcements module.

Is Announcements going in this direction or meant for this? Or do I have to build or buy a module to do what I would assume would be a major need of any portal platform in this day and age?

Web Content Management of news type items (that aggregrates and surfaces whats news, whats hot, whats been rated high) that allows for in place editing of the news by a non technical person and basic offline creation of news items and then getting approval and publishing the news or announcement/news item... seems to be the major requirement for any portal type component doing News Content publishing and WCM type things...

Announcements needs - news item publishing and mgmt of multplie authors and contributors and having categories with abstracts and being able to have community components tied to a news item etc.

Thanks for any tips and pointers about this component or how others are using or modifying it or what they are doing to do complete news publishing and this type of content management...

thx -

David

I couldn't agree more.

This module could become a great news/article module. If you check the roadmap a lot of nice things are there. However, it seems like there hasn't been any new work on the project or at least any news published in the blogs about future updates.

Paging is a big thing that needs to be added soon, also a summary then read more link to go to an actual page where the Full announcement / article could be viewed and also commented on (similar to the blog module).

I agree that this is needed. I posted a few weeks back looking for a way to display content similar to www.vitalvotes.com .
We are writing a module that will handle the ratings, comments (and comments on comments), popularity etc. similar to what is on that site. We are also incorporating some of the features of amazon.com 's ratings and reviews into this module. It will be able to be placed on any page.  We also will need to handle summaries as outlined in the inital post.

We may consider making the second release integrate with the announcements module or repository module. However, one of our requirements is that the end page have friendly url's available, which is difficult with the news or repository modules, although we are looking into this.

I'd like to see DNN more fully incorporate friendly urls into the core. Scott's friendly url's should be used but with the option to have dashes between the words (eg - HowToHaveFriendlyUrls.aspx becomes how-to-have-friendly-urls.aspx). We think this needs to be in place along with the ratings and comments for a complete solution on par with other Content Managements systems out there. If anyone has ideas, please post them here. We expect this module to be ready in a few weeks, and will probably make it available for free if there is sufficient interest.

Sounds great keep us informed.
Do you have a link to a demo site or something because I would rather keep this forum on topic. (The DNN Announcement Module)

thanks
