Hi all I’ve been an asp.net programmer using vb.net for past 7 8 years. Till now I’ve been creating my own management screens user screens purchasing screens and so on. I just got into this dotnetnuke. I am not sure if it’s the right thing to do. Is it possible to grab a portion of the code like the user management module and modify it in the needs of adding new tables to create? Or Create a custom create user pages. I already created my own user management page. Not sure if i need to do this or not. And I do need to know is I don’t want the hosting company be a problem so I don’t want anything extra to be installed on the hosting company this should be only for my website. Suggestions would be great.
Thanks

DotNetNuke is an open source application framework, that is:

  • open source means, that you get the source code and will be able to modify it, though most developers try to avoid this if possible, because you need to tranfer changes into each new version on upgrades
  • functions can usually added by creating a new module or skin object
  • some of the base functions are integrated using providers that can be replaced by custom providers

To run DotNetNuke on a hosted server you need an IIS, .Net Framework 2.0, MS SQL Server 200/2005 (Express) and - if available - MS AJAX.

As a rule - you should try to avoid modifying the core codebase in any way.
Doing so will have lots of potential ramifications down the track if you want to keep your site up to date with the latest versions of DNN.

Having said that - there is nothing stopping you taking any core module / element and converting it into a custom module that suits your needs.
