We host a number of branded partner sites that have essentially the same configuration, content and functions.  On several of the child portals the automated email notifications are failing apparently due to spam filters.  My guess is that because you can only have one SMTP server for all of the portals (set in the host settings) the spam filter balks at the difference between the from address and the server domain (e.g. when the filter sees an email from admin@childportal1.com but the server is servername.hostportal.com it drops the message off in bad mail).

Has anyone else had problems with this and figured out a good work around?  It would be nice if the SMTP settings could be configured at the child portal level, instead of being global.

Thanks.

There is other aspecs that affect whether an e-mail gets filtered that has nothing to do with the config of the DNN server.  It has to do with Proper DNS records for the Domain!

If you are hosting both the website and e-mail, then it should be easy.

On all domains, you need to have the Reverse DNS configured correctly.  Most people don't, and the big ISP's for a short time would reject all e-mails from a mis-configured domain (I had a few cleints several years ago that suddenly could not send e-mai to AOL and roadrunner) but unfortuatly they did not stick to their guns as most spam would have been eliminated.

You should have the domain (servername.hostportal.com) pointing back at the the public IP of the e-mail server.  It should match the MX record (which is the e-mail DNS record).r

THis is handled by the ISP of where the e-mail server is.

You can run a DNS test from this website.
