I installed DotNetNuke, creating a database in SQL Server 2000 called DotNetNuke, etc. and all is working well. Then, I decided I just wanted to create another, so I backed up the database and restored it as TMAM in the same SQL Server. In addition, I copied the DotNetNuke folder to another folder called TMAM. I gave rights to NETWORK SERVICE (on Windows Server 2003) for the folder, created a virtual folder in IIS called TMAM to mirror what I had done for DotNetNuke. When I type in http://localhost/TMAM for the URL, I get a page not found error. So, anyway, my question is where do I need to make changes to make this work besides in web.config (for SQL connection) and PortalAlias table?

You've got me on that one.  As long as your virtual directory is set up correctly in IIS that should work.

I don't have W2K3 so I don't know most of the differences but other than the network user I think they are pretty much the same.  You don't have the original install of DNN in the inet/webroot do you?

Original install is still where I put it...c:\websites\DotNetNuke. New (copied) install is in c:\websites\TMAM. localhost is set to be c:\websites. When I try to go to old one, I type URL of http://localhost/DotNetNuke and all works well. When I try to go to new one, I type URL of http://localhost/TMAM and get a page not found message.

Just in case this helps solve the problem, I will mention that initially I forgot to change the record in the PortalAlias table (of the new TMAM database) from http://localhost/DotNetNuke to http://localhost/TMAM. What happened in that case, when I typed the latter URL in my browser, was that I was ultimately brought to the old site (i.e. http://localhost/DotNetNuke). After I changed the PortalAlias record to contain http://localhost/TMAM, and then typed in that URL, I started getting the page not found error. Hmmm...

Okay, this is what I've done/have so far:

I downloaded DNN version 2.12.  I unzipped the file to C:\DotNetNuke.  I started up IIS and went to my default website and created a new virtual directory called "company-name" and pointed it to C:\DotNetNuke.

I gave my local machine user "ASPNET" Full Control to C:\DotNetNuke.

My local machine also has .NET Framework 1.1 and MS-Access (either XP or 2003).

That's all I did.  I did NOT create a database or anything else.

I go to Internet Explorer and type:   http://localhost/company-name and I get the error message:

Domain Name "localhost/company-name" Does Not exist in the database.

I am NOT a DBA or developer of any kind.  If someone can give me some down and dirty step by step instructions for DUMMIES I'd greatly appreciate it.

All I want to do is create a simple Web Portal using DNN so I can show my supverivosr "What a Portal Is" to give him an idea of what we can do to get into the Portal arena.

Thanks much!

Nadine

Thanks, but I'm still not sure if I totally understand everything I need to do.  Let me see if I have it right....

1.  I need to download DOTNETNUKE (it doesn't matter what version I use right?)

2.  I need to have IIS installed right?

3.  I need to unzip the downloaded Dotnetnuke zip file into some directory on my computer right?

4. I need to create a virtural directory within IIS right?

5. I need to have some database program on my computer right?  It can be either MSDE and ACCESS OR it can be the full blown SQL Server?  If I'm not using SQL I'm still a little confused on the database issue.

6. I have to go into the database program and create a generic database and name it dotnetnuke?  And I don't have to add anything or do anything inside that database right?

7.  I'm a little fuzzy on these next steps that you described above:

  • Use MS Access the office frontend to create an Database project that connects to your DB.  It will be called and adp or SQL Project not an Access project.
  • Name the project DotNetNuke, Save it and close Access.
  • Change the connection string in web.config to connect to the DB instance as user SA.

8.  Next I should be able to go into IE and type http://localhost/dotnetnuke and that's it right?

Adeian, you said that I could email you, but I don't know your email address.

Thanks.

Nadine
