I used to like the idea of buying skins, but I bought some that were just plain horrible from a coding standpoind so I too have been resorting to buidling my own.....sometimes I copy from templates....but mostly home grown now...

I've always had great luck using skins from www.salaro.com. The skins look and feel were only surpassed by the customer service from this long time DNN skin provider.

I hope that helps you...

I like tyler's work overall, but just custom code all my skins, cause I refuse to do it the lazy way and use tables. I do pure CSS skins and containers, and hopefully with a bit more time to study up on it I will redoing all my common modules to be xhtml compliant as well. (lol long term goal though) So far I have yet to find a provider that focus's on doing CSS skins. If anyone knows a good site for them let me know. I am required to have W3C / accessible sites, and table based skins fail to pass. If not I will probably start up my own site making custom CSS skins. In general just do a search for webpage templates, to convert a webpage template to DNN is a 30 min process usually. Depending on the template. Otherwise find a cheap skin provider and learn to make your own customizations. It's cheaper to learn how to build DNN skins then it is to buy them.

I'll add that, while custom skins are relatively easy to do yourself, the graphic design is not something many people, especially programmers, have a knack for.  That's one reason I seem to find a ton of poor skins around, they just don't look right.  Tweaking a commercial skin is often much more effective than starting from scratch.

Same here

I do all my skin myselfes. I know what looks good and know my way around javascript xhtml and css. But as a better programmer  and decent designer I prefer to convert designs from others. I think i have converted over 300 skins so far from simple ones to very complex.

As for buying skins, a custom skin is what makes your site stand out , nothing mor irritating than seeing the same site over and over and over with no distinction for your brand and company ( as is the case with those so called popular table infested snowcovered skins )

So far im pretty happy with my css/xhtml  skin coversion niche
