Hello,

All I am about to attempt an upgrade of an old DNN 2.0 site to the latest version 04.05.03.  I am a little nervous and going to try to perform the upgrade on a local instance before hitting the production site.

Does anyone one know of any potentional issues I might run into or things I might need to do before attempting.  I mean other than make backups of all files and the database, I got that.

Thanks,

Jay Smith

You might try a few options.

If 4.5.3 upgrade doesn't go well, you might try upgrading an older version, such as 3.1.1 or 3.2.2, then try upgrading to 3.3.7, then try 4.5.3's upgrade.

Backup backup backup, test test test :)

Ohhhh boy! That's a big jump. If you have any custom built modules, you'll have some work to do. I remember having to change all the imports statements and changing the namespaces. I would most definitely try to get to the highest version of 3.x before going to 4.x.

I have a few recommendations...

Risks:

-Custom modules can and may very well break at some point diring the upgrade
-Custom skins may very well not be compatiable with the new version
-Data integrity issues may cause a few problesms at points due to an issue with old versions of file manager

I personally recommend taking a staged approach as mentioned above.  got to an eary version of 3.x first, then go to 3.3.5 (or 3.3.7), then go to 4.5.3.  Remember that when you make the 3.x to 4.x upgrade that you must change the ASP.NET version.

I have a detailed tutorial on the upgrade from 3.x to 4.x on my website http://www.mitchelsellers.com

Thanks for all the good advice, I did try the staight upgrade to the 4.x, it failed on of the sql updates. Going to try the phased approach you mentioned on my sandbox next.

We are running  an old version of the Adveragous Forums (sp?) and that is the only module that has been added to the site.  We will be using the ActiveForums forum module after the upgrade.  I am also worried about the skin, but we have a few guys around that could help straighten that out as well.

Thanks again for the advise. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Jay
