I have a specific user that cannot login.  When trying I get the following error:

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Any ideas of what might be causing this?

Is this a new install?  An upgrade?  Which version of DNN?

Have you been able to login before?

Have you changed skins recently?
