HI, I have a hosted server that has an unknown version of DNN already installed. AFAIK it doesn't work/isn't setup properly. (Install date 7-31-2006)

I want to have the latest version and have it working properly.

Do I try to copy new install files right over the existing files, then try to run the Install page? Second, will it take care of upgrading the database?

Or, do I very, very carefully delete each DNN folder, file, table, and sp? ( a toughie, given that I do not know which those are, and it's on the root) so that I can do a clean fresh install?

I cannot do a complete wipe because there are other files and database objects that are NOT related to DNN and cannot be deleted or they will bring other live sites down.

Is there still a place to set a DB prefix for DNN db objects? (can each table have "DNN_" in front of it?)

Finally, related question: since this hosting account must hold DNN and Non-DNN sites, should DNN be installed in the root or in a folder?

Thank you.

Update: it is version 4.3.3, and I got it working last night.

So, now that it works, should/can I download the Install package, FTP those files over the existing DNN files, and then go to the Install.aspx page, and will it upgrade ok?

It needs upgrading. I installed two modules, and both do not work properly (one errored during install, the other errors when added to a page). Both modules work on my local server, which has the latest 4.5.5 version. I think upgrading may help.

Where is the place to set a DB prefix for DNN db objects? (can each table have "DNN_" in front of it?)

Finally, related question: since this hosting account must hold DNN and Non-DNN sites, should DNN be installed in the root or in a folder? What is the best practice? Right now both work side by side.... the default.asp file is hit first, and routes the asp sites accordingly. If the domain name is not found in the list of asp sites, then it does a Response.Redirect to Default.aspx so that DNN can handle it. I'm happy that both can work together, but would like to know for the next time how this is usually handled.

Thank you.

For the upgrade process you pretty much have it down, however there is some web.config items that need to be modified.

Have a look at my upgrade guide at my blog site http://www.mitchelsellers.com
