What exactly does Test link in host SMTP settings do?  I always get Timed Out message on providing the needed credentials. Does web.config have to be modified in order that mails will be delivered? Are there any other settings to configure elsewhere?

test is just that: it sends out a test mail to the email address of the host (as defined under "Host Details" in host settings. In short, you need to make sure the following is in working order:

  • Host email address is an existing and working email address
  • the smtp server you pointed to must be reachable by DNN. This means that you have to check whether connections from the ip address of your site to the mail server are allowed.
  • You have to check whether you need to authenticate with the mail server

Thanks, ErikVB. One thing I forgot to mention was that the credentials supplied by me were exactly the same as those specified in my Outlook Express which I'm using for sending and receiving mails. I specified the outgoing SMTP port also, like mail.nic.in:465 where 465 is my Outgoing SMTP Port and also supplied the same login and password as well as SSL which I'm using in Outlook Express. But still I get a Timeout error. Is there any other way I can make sure that the connections from my site to the mail server are allowed?

That is a strange port for SMTP.  Are you running OE on the server to test?  I'm assuming SMTP is not installed on the DNN server.  Is this a hosted server?

in the field SMTP server and port, please enter mail.nic.in:465, check basic authentication, check SMTP enable SLL, enter your smtp username and password. Update the host settings, and click "Test" to send the test email. Is it still not working?
