I have access to my DNN server and are doing backups of both the whole DB and the DNN install dir, so that part is no problem at all.

Now let's say I have X number of portals running in the same DNN install and I screw something up on portal Y and want to restore that portal ONLY, is that possible and if so, how ? I have looked at the database contents using the MS SQL Server Management Studio tool and I see alot of tables and other data, but I can't work out what data corresponds to what portal. I had hoped the data would be grouped for each portal but it doesn't look like that.

The reason I want to be able to restore a single portal and not the whole database is that I plan on making backups only once a week (or even more seldom) and in that time several users might have updated their portals and I dont want everyone to loose their changes just because I might need to restore a single portal.

My guess is that this isn't currently doable in an easy way, but I had to ask.

No this is not something that is easily possible, there are HUNDREDS of potential issues with doing this as all data is in shared tables for all portals...

It appears that it would be possible....but you'd have to write a pretty extensive SQL statement.

http://www.unixadmintalk.com/f46/help-need-restore-specific-records-backup-copy-database-184959/ has some information on this.

If you don't add/remove modules, you could define the script once for reuse.  You'd need to restore each record that is associated with the PortalID for the portal.  You'd probably also have to find the ModuleIDs for all modules the Portal used and restore those associated records as well.

Ok, it was like I feared/suspected :(

So, I guess the only "solution" to being able to restore a portal without affecting all the other portals too much is to make frequent backups of the whole DB (like once every day) so no other portal will lose more thanthe changes for the last day when user X screws up and I need to restore portal Y for him/her.

Too bad, I had hoped each portal was being saved in their own tables but apparently this is not the case.
