What I need, and I'm hoping that someone knows the answer, is a much more flexible repository that can have multiple downloads per item, links to full size images, formatted text and imbedded graphics for each item or group of items, much more like the project pages of this site...

Any thoughts on the right module?

I am not sure that I understand what you want to do... Can you explain a little bit ?
The project here can be done with Repository, I do not see one item with multiple files in one repository.

If you include a thumbnail, then you can link to the full size image, but of course, for having multiple files for one item, this is currently impossible.
Formatted text is possible.
Can you give an example of what you search ???

Hi, essentially its a software download site for 'add-ons' to a software platform. The difficult part (and the only one that I haven't built with Repository) is that each software item may have a number of downloads, for example: CompleteDownload in a zip, recorded video of a demo, a word file with instructions or other information, screen shots, etc. The best excample I've found is: Salesforce.com's AppExchange.

Note the multiple download items and single page view of the chosen item. Obviously I could build a page for each download and link from repository, but this seems to miss the point!

I'm also looking at the store to see if this works better (assuming I can strip out the payment side of things).

Have a look to Ventrian modules, like Property Agent, it may fit your desire (some customisation is required in this case). Otherwise, for sure it must exists modules for multiple download (there is a swisds website and module for downloading items, I do not remember the name, if someone remembers ??? It is well known here).
