Hello,

I've been asked to consider a solution that requires about 1200 portals (unique top level domains). Yep, that's over one thousand. So I'm off thinking about ways to address the challenge and running some tests, calculating the number of servers, geo-distribution and what-not.

What is the largest number of portals you've seen in a single installation of DotNetNuke?

Regards,

Andrew

one user reported of an installation containing 8.000 portals - but i am sure, managing them will be a nightmare, personally I would add between 20 and 100 portals to an installation, depending on requirements, size and complexity of the site (and the modules installed). Be aware, that restore cannot be done for a single portal of an installation, e.g. after a user accidently corrupted his site.

Ah, yet another reason for me to get the Red Gate Software suite, perhaps I will in the near future; I bet the operations team or call center will need a way to deal with this too. Thanks for the tip!

8000 reported on a single machine? A saw your forum post from June that estimated the memory footprint for a single portal as 50 to 150MB (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/105/threadid/141320/scope/posts/Default.aspx). If every site consumes just 25MB of memory, that's still 200GB of memory when all 8000 are spun up.

Regards,

Andrew

As mentioned it is VERY hard to say as every setup is different depending on the items included (Modules, skins, content etc..)

But I highly agree that I personally would not do more than 20-50 or so on a single installation, management can get a bit clunky in my opinion.  You will need to be sure to keep up on monitoring items as well.

Also, be sure to consider the affects of not being able to restore a single portal.
