I have just released a custom HttpModule that serves as an application level catcher of system errors that allows you to send e-mail notifications when errors occur on your ASP.NET websites.  The best part is that since it is an HttpModule you do not have to put code in your global.asax file to accomplish this!

The HttpModule offers the following features

  • Ability to turn all error handling off quickly using 1 configuration setting
  • Easy installation with minor web.config file additions
  • Ability to provide your own text for e-mails with tokens for error data
  • Ability to send both HTML and Plain-Text Emails
  • Ability to specify a user redirect location

The best part of all is that this is free and ALL future versions will be free as well.  Future versions will allow for logging to the database of errors.

This can be helpful on a DotNetNuke site or any other ASP.NET sites that you may be in charge of.  For more informaiton please see the links below.

Mithcel,

Thanks for posting this. Can you advise how this is different / better than the 'Event Notification' functonality already embedded in the DNN core? the exisitng 'Event Notification' functonality can - for example - also send out emails but can do so without having to change the web.config or uploading of a new module...

The way I see this as being helpful for DNN installations is that it provides a method that can capture 99.9% of all errors and will send the notifications without difficulty.  DNN cannot capture all errors, including db connectivity issues and this HttpModule can.

DNN does have a good amount of notification built in so this might not be something that all members of the DNN community can use, however, many developers here also have reguar ASP.NET sites that could benefit from this module.
