When a user clicks a link to download a file it produces this error in the site log:

This appears to be an issue with compression and/or the file server (linkclick.aspx) built into DNN.  This is an issue outside of the documents module.

Regardless, I would try to temporarily turn off compression and see if the error goes away.

Could anyone point me in the right direction as to how I could solve this problem or where I could go to get information about the problem?  Also, I am not sure how to turn off compression to test to see if this is the problem.

As I mentioned above try turning off compression and see if the error goes away.
