I've got this sorted out, but would be interested in the Team's thoughts on why it's happening.

We had a customised XFlex skin and set of containers developed for the site. We applied the skin and a container as a default in the Site setting and let all 80 pages of the portal use those defaults (unless a page required a change).

As this was set up, the SQL Trace revealed there was approximately 300 calls to the GetTabPermissionsByPortal stored procedure for the user sequence of load the site, log in and navigate to a user page. As you can imagine, it ran like a dog and when multiple users accessed the site, it went to its knees.

When I specifically set each page's skin and container setting, the number of calls to the stored procedure for the above user sequence went to 9 !!!! The site now has wings and I can start breathing again.

Hope this helps out others in the same situation.

Paul and DNN team,

Did you happen to find out anything more on this problem?  We are also experiencing this problem and we have thousands of pages running on a dozen portals.  It is not feasible to set each page's skin and container individually.  Our site has this problem on and off and the repetitive GetTabPermissionsByPortal calls cause the server to go to 100% usage and we get numerous entries into the error log (many being the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error.)

Any information would be appreciated.
