Currently I am using a hosting company for my DNN website, but now are considering purchasing the equipment to host from my home.

I currently have DSL 5.0, and was wondering what equipment/server I should get for hosting a community forum that basically only has AF forums and an event calendar.

Money is an object, and like most of us I do not have unlimited funds. I would be looking for a modest piece of equipment but in turn do now what it to be outdated in a year.

What would you get?

I am not familiar with DSL in the U.S., be aware, that in most cases it is asymetric, i.e. upstream is less than downstream, but upstream is needed for your web server to deliver its data. Besides, it depends on the number of visitors, how much CPU speed and memory is needed for the machine.

So this means you only have 530K to send data to your users. May be okay in some instances. Of course then you have to think about IP addresses and DNS. If you have a dynamic Ip address which you probably have unless you have paid for a business account then you will need to purchase one of the services that hosts your IP dynamically. I've never heard of anyone having a reliable experience with this setup.

As far as the specs. You are going to need a router and firewall that can NAT your external IP to the internal IP of your webserver. As far as the webserver, you will want Server and not try to do it on XP unless you only want to ever have one domain. If you want to be legal on licensing, then you will need processor based licenses for Windows and SQL Server( unless you use MSDE or Express). Those are not cheap.

As far as the machine it all depends on the number of users connecting. It does not have to be all that beefy of a machine since you won't be serving thousands of users with your bandwidth, but you will need at least a gig of Memory to run SQL on the same box as the webserver and 2 Gigs won't hurt.

In my humble opinion you would come out better by just purchasing a VPS account at one of the hosting companies to do this. You can get a decent VPS that has all the power you will need for a little over a hundred bucks a month.

I am with bhopkins on this one.

I personally am using my home server to host a few "test" environments that I am exposing externally and I have even faster upload speeds than what you do, however, the sites performnace is less than desirable.

Not to mention you have to make sure that you have a static IP address otherwise DNS becomes a nightmare.

Now, I am not sure why you are looking to leave your current hosting provider, but I can say that I would NOT recommend it.
