I am having a problem getting version 4 to install.  I have followed the procedures to the best of my knowledge that are in the pdf "DotNetNuke Installation Guide" that I downloaded on this website.  I have set up the IIS and the virtual Directory, I have created the database and user, and I have set the web.config file according to the way it says to do.  I set all of the folder permissions per the .pdf, and I don't know what else to do.  When I get to the end, and type http://localhost/dotnetnuke I get a HTTP 403 Forbidden saying that I could connect to the web, but that the website needs me to login.  Honestly, I am very new at all of this so I could have missed something.  I assumed the uid and pwd in the config file are for the database, and I set up and userid and password using SQL Server Management Studio Express.  Iwas a little confused about whether to use web.config, release.config, or development.config.  On my virtual directory settings, I set the application protection to low, since I really don't know what that does, and I noticed that the pdf said something about that if you were required to use medium, you have to make a bunch of other changes to the config file and use a certain name, like "release" instead of "web".  i totally admit that I am nubbie when it comes to this so if you have any pointers or suggestions or other reading or websites I can hit, it would be greatly appreciated.  I am running Windows XP PRO SP2, with SQL Express 2005.

Thanks

I am also having the same problem and have tried an installation on SQL 2000 and SQL 2005.  I really hope somebody has a solution.

Thanks,

Honestly, I 'd bypass using IIS on localhost if possible. I use Visual Studio or Visual web developer to launch my site locally. I hope that helps! I'm not sure about the error. Did you give NETWORK SERVICE and/or  ASPNET permissions on the root directory?

Madeforworship,

I would agree with Phixate on launching locally from with Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer.

To do this, open Visual Web Developer (or Studio), select File > Open Site, then navigate to the folder your website is in, and click open.

Then, in the Solution Explorer inside VWD, right click on Default.aspx and click "View in Browser."
