I am developing my first DNN website (and therefore my first skin) for a client.  Right now, every time I tweak the skin (and getting things to look exactly perfect when the DNN controls are active requires a lot of tweaking cycles), I am following this procedure:

  1. Save all the files from my editing environment.
  2. Delete my local zip of the skin from the last iteration.
  3. Select and zip the files.
  4. Go to the admin page for the site and upload the zip file
  5. Refresh the page in the other browser (I sometimes use Firefox for the admin and IE for the user level, or vice versa so I don't have to keep logging in and out, and don't need the overhead of virtual machines)

This process is very tedious when I have to do it dozens of times in an hour as an iterative style developer, to see the affect of a new <div> or a new CSS style.

I am wondering, is it possible to edit skins in place on the server and cut down the cycle necessary to change/test for each iteration?

I have DreamWeaver 8, Expression Web, and Visual Studio 2005 available, although I like Expression best for basic look and feel stuff these days.

Thanks very much for your help.

Yes you can edit the files direclty on the server. If you are using .ascx based skins then the changes should replicate quickly (clear your cache or hard refresh: ctrl + F5). If you r using html based skins then you'll have to reparse you skin.
