I just got hold of a brand spanking new rack server with windows server 2003. This server will be used as a web server for hosting a DNN application. We have a 5 user CAL for the server and we will be using dnn authentication. Am I right in thinking the dnn authentication will not use a CAL and can anybody suggest the best licensing mode to use...Per Server or Per Device/User (or does it matter?)

Kind Regards

Colm

due to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/overview.mspx:

A Windows CAL is not required if access to the server software is via the Internet and is "unauthenticated"—for example, accessing a Web site for general information where no identifying credentials are exchanged.

AFAIK this excludes intranet users, i.e. if a large number of internal users are going to access the web site, you will use server licence.
