I just performed the upgrade process and forget to enter in the 'machineKey validationKey="' string from my old web.config.  After the fact I entered it into the web.config.  I'm having issues with a few modules that are compatible with 4.5.5 and I can't open the Event Viewer.

Should I restore from backup and do it over?

you shall be able to reenter previously used machine key w/o issues, otherwise you wouldn't be able to login. Issues with modules might be due to an not identic 2nd database connection string in your web.config.

The old web.config didn't have any custom strings added to it.  I assume you're referring to the application connection string? I get the below error when accessing the event viewer via the Admin menu....  I double checked and all connection strings are correct.

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. I found the problem.  The event log and schedule history table needed to be deleted and/or truncated.  The module that was giving me problems uses the scheduler on a regular basis.  The event viewer obviously reads the event log table.  Running the below queries fixed it..

TRUNCATE TABLE EventLog

Delete From ScheduleHistory where ScheduleHistoryID > 1

thanks!
