I have a DNN402 site running successfully on my local development XP Pro system,
developed using the starter kit and VWD 2005 Express, SQL 2005 express. I have zipped it up, sent it to host (W2003 server), and given
NETWORK AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE permissions on the directory. But I still get the error (seen very frequently on these forums!!):

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

and the accompanying information does not help me much.

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +125
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +83
   DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +3797
   System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +92
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +64
I would be grateful if someone could help. I have a site ready to go, and cant show it to the world...

Is your SQL server authenicating to windows or is it to SQL? If it is Windows authenication only, then change it to 'Windows and SQL'. You can easily do that from your registery. I had the same problem with my DNN installation on Win 2003 and that did the trick.

Also, give ASP.Net account permissions to the Windows directory with at least Read&Execute.

If you have any questions let me know.

My sql server express is already set up with "Windows and SQL".  Also I ran a "Hello World" type website (but displaying records in a gridview) using .NET 2.0 and sql server express and with the database in the default location of app_data.  That ran fine, and I did not change the web.config from how it ran on the local XP system

As for NTFS permissions I have given servername\ASPNET and IIS_WPG accounts full control over windows directory.

Still no joy!  What is there about DNN access to dynamically attached database in app_data that makes it different from above .NET 2 app???

John,

This is for sure permissions issue... but to be safe, can you send me a copy of your web.config file, and a "full" screen shot of the error message? I am just as puzzled as you are. My email address is NightHawk13@hotmail.com

For Windows Server 2003 the dbo owner and full control virdir user is NETWORK SERVICE.

You're still setup for XP?

(connectionstrings are most secure with Integrated Security; they'll use NETWORK SERVICE or ASPNET automatically, without a username and password showing in the web.config)
