I know this question is not specific to DNN, but I figured I'd submit my question here since it probably applies to anyone into DNN:

Have any IT professionals out there run into a problem with your employer or client who does NOT understand the potential gained from using social networking as a way of getting exposure and making business contacts?

I've been running into this problem a lot, where local businesses just don't get social networking -- and if fact block sites like MySpace, chat software, and even block our own client websites! They think these sites, doing blogs, podcasts, etc is a complete waste of time and would rather spend their energy using traditional marketing or just relying on word-of-mouth. Their website is more or less a business card that get 1 or 2 hits a month.

But I really think even NON-TECH companies can benefit from social networking. Am I wrong? Are there companies, business models where social network IS a waste of time? How do I convince these people otherwise? I'm constantly getting slammed and laughed at for bringing up MySpace as a legit place to do business. Yet I see industry experts claim this is way more effective that your typical old school SEO tactics.

Still, I have to consider the quality of customer or contact being made off social networking may not be a good match for a lot of companies.

Funny you should bring this up.  My current employer is a large entertainment company that owns a social networking website, yet bans employees from social networking websites.  Our own corporate website is essentially a brochure and a stockticker (or was, I should say - I haven't bothered to visit it in at least two years).  Frustrating.
