Is it possible to have DNN portals on the same install, some that use regular SQL logins, and some portals that use AD/Windows authentication?

Or is it a host setting for all portals in a given install?

Yes it is. The provider has to be installed by the host but each portal can enable/disable it though there's currently a bug when it's disabled after being enabled (it doesn't disable but that'll be fixed in the next week or so if I can get time to work on it.
