Hey there,

I run DNN 3.2 on a site that gets roughly 200k pageviews a day.  I am constantly seeing what appears to be a performance issue with something, though I can't quite nail it down.  Basically the server peaks to 100% CPU, then stops and hangs around 5%, then 100%, then 5%, over and over and over.  When it is at 100% everything runs slows or doesn't load at all.  When it is at 5%, things *FLY* extremely fast.

It seems like DNN is going through some routine over and over, one it can't escape completely from.  When the server is at 5%, things fly extremely fast, so it definitely is not a server resource/CPU issue.  Also, I checked Host->Schedule and nothing is running at intervals that you see below so I'm completely stumped.  This is becoming quite a huge problem and I really need to resolve this.

Anybody have any ideas on what I could do?  Any help is deeply appreciated!

Check out the screenshot here of my server CPU.  Hardware is Dual P4, 2G ram, lots of HD.  IIS is standard, 1 worker process.

Tim, that's more horsepower than we run the dotnetnuke.com site with... and we routinely handle anywhere between 150K-300K page views per day... running forums & blogs, etc.  The CPU usage definitely points to a cyclical recurrence... how are your cache settings?  Do you have a lot of RSS feeds do you have on your site?  Or other items that pull from different sources?  What kind of settings are on your worker process... is it actually shutting down abnormally and recycling?

Hey Scott, thanks for the response!

I've tried several cache settings, however, right now it is sitting at heavy caching with memory selected.  It used to be moderate, however, I changed it to heavy to see if it would help.  Doesn't seem to matter much though.  In fact, I have no idea what the difference is between heavy and moderate!  :)

No RSS feeds actually and really nothing that pulls from any other sources.  I forgot to mention this, but I'm sure you guessed it, all the CPU is being used up by the w3wp.exe process.  Sometimes it just sits at 5-10% like a good server, but often it does that cyclic spiky-thingy.

My worker processes are set completely default.  1 process, nothing checked in the recycling tab, nothing checked in the performance tab, nothing in health tab but for the 90sec shutdown/startup timers.

But you did bring up 1 thing... is there a way I can check and verify if the worker process is abnormally shutting down and restarting?  That would easily cause the spikes and symptoms I am seeing.  I don't think this affects anything, but I have a gob of users, about 1,400 portals, and about 20,000 pages, all on 1 DNN server.  My SQL2000 server is on another machine so that doesn't come into play.

Otherwise, I still have zero idea : (

Thanks again in advance for all your comments!

I figured out what the problem was, but I have no idea why it causes a problem.

I have a bunch of  <!-- #include  statements in my .aspx files so I can dynamically change some stuff outside of DNN.  However, everytime I change something that is included, it causes DNN to dump all its cache, which causes huge CPU spikes and inaccessability.

Anybody know why it does this?  :)
