I downloaded and was about to print and get a spiral bound copy of the DotNetNuke Skinning Guide (by Shaun Walker) made up when I read the following on page two of the document...

"...no part of this document may be reproduced,
stored in or introduced into a retrieval system, or transmitted in any form or by any
means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise), or for any
purpose, without the express written permission of Perpetual Motion Interactive
Systems, Inc. Perpetual Motion Interactive Systems may have patents, patent
applications, trademarks, copyrights, or other intellectual property rights covering
subject matter in this document."

Does this mean I just broke the law by downloading it?  I downloaded and stored on in the tools folder on our development server without permission from Perpetual Motion.  I also asked the print/copy shop here at work to print me a copy but (luckily) they refused stating that it would break the copyright.

If you are not allowed to download and not allowed to print the manual why is it available on the DotNetNuke site?  I have emailed and asked (via the web form) but no reply after more than 24 hours.

I'm certainly not a copyright expert, but that statement is intended to stop you extracting content and passing it off as your own. AFAIK you're fine to print personal copies as long as your copy has not been altered and still contains the copyright notice. I'll ask the board of directors and see if I can get any further clarification.

Hey thanks cathal .. what I'd like besides the clarification is an email I can show the copy/print shop saying it's ok to print the manual for personal use.

I think you are right .. the intention probably is that it is ok to download & print but if you take what is written on page two literally, then you are not legally allowed to do either of these.

Thanks again for chasing it up.

John.

Your usage is covered under fair use (see page 18, §107). The intent of the language, as Cathal pointed out, is to deter usage of the document outside the provisions of fair use.
