Wow. I assumed this was the same button as before 4.5.  My bad!  Thanks

I have to disagree about the value of the button however, certainly as a top level button.  The toggling provides very little information on how the content will appear and flow.  Not to speak of the confusion it could create (yes, biased)

I recommend it is at least reset to "off" in the next log in.

It would also be nice to be able to customize the top level button in general.  Like the home screen of most cell phones.

If I am a page designer, I don't care about the content and only want to layout the modules on a page for another role to come along and create/edit the content.

Hhmmm ... well ... O.K: ... nearly convinced!

You can customize the control panel by writing your own, and then installing it (like a module).

Once it is installed, you just need to go to:

  1. Navigate to the 'Host Settings' page
  2. Open the 'Advanced Settings' and 'Other Settings' sections.
  3. Choose '<NAME OF YOUR CUSTOM CP>' for the control panel options
  4. Click Update

A good example is what was done over at DNN Group

You could also use a module like the one over at Arrow Nuke to limit functions on the control panel.

Why isn't this with the other "modes" as a radio button?  They perform similar functions really. I could understand if design mode was also available in preview but it's not so there are effectively three modes: Design, Preview and Edit.  They should all be together.

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one.
