Is it possible to use the DNN core profile for the forums. Seems like it would be a huge advantage to using the core forum mod and easier for users to kep one profile up to date.

Yes, but its not as straight forward as it may seem. A module can create profile properties if it needs to, but cannot make those visible (technically you can, but you shouldn't to avoid changing registration). You would also have to check to see if the property exists first. The next problem you face, if we do a check and see it doesn't exist, what group do we put it in? (ie. Street belongs in Address)

Regardless, you still have forum specific items such as subscriptions which would require a user to manage them in a "My Settings" area. While I feel we can offload some items, this area is never going to completely go away.

Makes sense...............maybe leave the settings...but when a users clicks on another users name it takes them to the main reg profile. Just a thought!

Thanks,

I have mentioned this before, but I think an easy solution to this may be to allow templating and replacement tokens - for example, on PokerDIY, I use Ventrian's Private Messages and the Smart-Thinker Profile system. You can see how I have hacked my signature to use the ST UP profile, but it would be great if this could be automated.

I would love to be able to have my Add to Group, Invite to Event, Send Message, and use the ST UP image etc. - all this would require is an HTML block that exposes the UserID - it makes the module so much more flexible and can plug and play with other modules (core and 3rd party). I also don't think the replacement solution would be relatively hard to do for the benefit it would provide (I currently have to turn off UserLists and Private Messages on the forum as it just confuses the user having 2 identical sets of functionality. I provide a site-level user directory of poker players, and Private Messenging is not just limited to the Forums.

Chris, if you decide to look into this more, let me know and I can provide some use cases/ideas if you want?

A big YES to what Rodney is saying!

The more sophisticated web sites out there will be looking to have one central profile (whether core or custom) that links to blogs, forums, wikies, messages etc. After all when you go to myspace.com you don't configure one profile for your friends and another one for the forums.  The reason I was looking at AF at first is because it provides this functionality.

I agree that "my settings" will always be needed and having a forum profile will help some users that have only a forum on their web site. As long as it could be templated it will serve both requirements well.

Thanks.

Ivan
