How would i create a role that will allow someone to have the capability to administer (authorizing/unauthorizing and reset passwords) the users registering to the portal without having access to add/delete modules, pages or other admin rights?  I guess what i need is to create a role that will allow the assigned user to this role to only view the "User Accounts" menu item from the Admin drop down menu.

It seems like every time I have a question, I check the forums and someone has already asked It (as it should be) yet they go unanswered. This thread has been viewed over 200 times, so I know I am not the only one wanting the answer, even if it's “no you can't”.   I just launched dotnetnuke as our corporate Intranet, but it seems like so many simple things, (like this) aren't available or if they are I can't find information on how to do it. Wondering if I picked the wrong portal....

What version of DNN?  DNN 5.x already allows this.

With 4.x you have two options:
You'll either need a third party module such as Effority User & Roles Manager (now open-source and free!) or you can just fiddle a little with your copy of DNN as outlined here.  Note that if you "fiddle" with your copy of DNN you'll need to do something special for the USERS module -- check the comment from "Rick" on 3/2/2009 for the simple-but-critical alteration that's needed for the USERS module.  If you're not comfortable around programming code then you may be best off with the Effority module.

Cheers!

mamlin,

Thanks for your reply...  aleast now I know my options and limitations.  I went with 4.x as 5.x was still listed as not for production when I launched a couple months ago.  Wonder if we should upgrade.... is it ready for prime time now?

Jamie,

not sure, if it is of help to unbury threads, which are 2 years old. Anyhow, besides mamlin's suggestions you might want to look at TRTControlPanel from DaveBuckner.com.

Cheers from Germany,
