You're on the right track. Here's the solution:

  1. Go to the Module Settings page of any module.
  2. Under Page Settings - Basic Settings, deselect the Display Container? option.
  3. Under Page Settings - Advanced Settings, select Set As Default Settings? to set all new modules to have the container hidden.
  4. Under Page Settings - Advanced Settings, select  Apply to all Modules? to set all existing modules to have the container hidden.
  5. Click the Update link.

Note: the containers will still be displayed until you select View or Log out.
