Something similar was posted in a different Forum but I thought I would repost here since it seems more applicable here.  I am wanting to change the automatic email message that is sent out when a new user registers on the forum.  Problem is I can not find the email templates for this.  Where are the these templates stored?

Those email templates are part of the content that's localizable. So even if you're using en-US as your default and only language, your need to change the templates for your emails in the language editor.

System > Languages > Language editor > You'll want to have a look at the resource EMAIL_USER_REGISTRATION_PRIVATE_BODY.Text. (almost halfway down the list in Global Resources/Global Resources.
