Hi,

About 5 days ago PokerDIY started timing out seemingly randomly. I had not installed any new modules or made any changes. My host suggests that it a SQL connection issue.

Restarting the app helped it briefly and then immediately it died again, so it is not high load issue.

I looked at the SQL activity (SQL 2005) when it was timing out, and some processes on Smart-Thinker (on the same VPS, but a different DB) were "SUSPENDED" (GetRatingsByPage - I think it may be a forum proc but not sure)

So - is it possible for a different DB to affect another like this (if it used up all available DB connections?)

How can I find out exactly what is causing the time out problem (http://www.pokerdiy.com/Default.aspx?tabid=354&error=Timeout+expired.++The+timeout+period+elapsed+prior+to+completion+of+the+operation+or+the+server+is+not+responding.&content=0)

It is not one specific module or page - I think it is a generic issue with connections. I have cleared out my event log, checked disk space, trimmed the SiteLog etc.

Any pointers on where to start looking appreciated please... my main question is - should I be worried about the "Suspended SQL processes" and could this be causing the problem?

Update: PokerDIY was timing out again (I have never seen Smart-Thinker.com timeout) so I restarted both apps for each site, and immediately PokerDIY timed out again - any ideas what this proves (that normally fixes any problem!)

are there any tables of extreme size/ number of entries? did you make sure, that the transaction log is truncated on backups?

Ah, how embarrassing - I thought I had checked the log size - it was just under a gig! I shrunk the DB and it's tiny now... could that be the cause of such timeouts do you think Sebastian? Thanks for the advice..

Rodney, yes log size can lead into severe performance issues. Glad you were able to fix it.
