I am trying to modify the FAQs module...

I downloaded and installed the FAQs module with source code. The intallation through DNN didn't copy over the VB files, so I copied them afterward. When I try to dubug it in VS2005, I get the message "no symbols have been loaded" on the debug breakpoints I put in within the VB file.

When I right click on the ASCX file and select "view code", I get nothing. All the working code I have pulls up the code-behind VB file when I do this without a problem. Debug woks fine on everything else too.

I've had this problem before... it seems like copy-n-pasting to a asp.net project somehow detaches the vb file from the ascx file.

What can I do to link them and be able to debug again?

you usually create symbols during compile in debug mode. Not sure about your issue...

Delete the files from the obj directory in the source project itself.  Delete the debug folder. I have had this problem before myself, and have spent much time searching online for an answer, and surprisingly there are not a lot of threads out there.  But they are out there.

You debug files versioning is out of sync with the project dll you are using.  The dll cannot load the debugging symbols because it does not recognize the pdb file belonging to it.  Hopefully this will do the trick for you.  It typically does, but if this doesn't work.  Delete the dll from the bin folder, the release folder, the debug folder, wherever it is, still delete the obj folder and rebuild your solution.

I'll check back.  I know how frustrating this snag is.  Fortunately the solution is straight-forward.

Thanks for the suggestion. It does make a lot of sense that deleting the dll would give me a fresh start. I did this and it did create new dll's, but I still have the same problem. I think my problem may be before that.

In VS2005, I can go into the HTML module (included with DNN),  right click on an "ascx" page, and choose "view code"... and it opens the linked "vb" file with the code-behind code.

If I try to do this with a module that I copied in via Windows Explorer, the same "view code" click opens the source view of the "ascx" page. It doesn't open the "vb" file. The "ascx" and the "vb" files seem to be disconnected. This is the same for all modules and "ascx/vb" pairs I've tried copying into the "DesktopModules" folder.

I build my own modules all the time for my company's site and they work fine, as long as I start fresh and don't copy files into the project.

Am I missing a VS2005 option maybe?

I guess my big question really is...

What are the steps to be able to import and modify a module's source (or any ascx page with codebehind) with VS2005?
