You can take an ASP.net app offline by uploading an App_Offline.htm file to your root.

There may be a better way, but this is how I have always done it...and once back up again, I rename it to App_Offline.htm.bak, so it is there for the next DNN upgrade. :)

As terp metioned you can use the app_offline.htm file to take it offline, you must rename the file BEFORE you can actually run the upgrade though.

Will app_offline interfere if  you run http://www.mysite.com/instal.install.aspx to initiate an upgrade?

Yes, app_offline.htm kills ALL .NET 2.0 processing.

My recommendation is to use it while uploading your files.  Set auto upgrade to false if your web.config, then remove the app_offline.htm file.  You can then manually call the upgrade with minimal impact to the browsing users.
