this is a known issue, which will be fixed in DNN 4.7.0.

Remove the trailing ";" in the connection strings in your web.config file.

Thanks Sebastian.

Yes, this got me over this particular hurdle ...

My next problem is the following (which is probably still linked to the connection string and the trouble with the trailing semi-colons !!!):

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'xxxx\Install\UnderConstruction.htm' is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

I'm using a shared hosting package so am probably limited to what I can do in terms of access rights if it isn't a problem with the connection string.

you still shall be able to set file permissions (grant full access for "Network Service"), please contact your hosting provider for details.

Thanks again Sebastian, this was exactly the answer.

Incidentally, it was very easy to set these permissions myself even within the shared-hosting environment.

My next problem ...  I'm getting the "site under construction" screen every time I navigate to the domain when I'd expect the installation routine to start-up?

Is there any detailed logging/tracing of the installation that I can use to follow these problems through and solve them myself?
