I'm using the ThingsForSale module for testing. I have an Insert  trigger in place on the table. In my controller I have...

<DataObjectMethod(DataObjectMethodType.Insert)> _

Public Shared Sub ThingsForSale_Insert(ByVal ThingsForSaleInfo As ThingsForSaleInfo)

Try

DataProvider.Instance().ExecuteNonQuery(

'THIS IS FOR TESTING ONLY

Dim mymsg = New StringBuilder

mymsg.Append(ex.ErrorCode)

mymsg.Append(ex.LineNumber.ToString)

mymsg.append(ex.Message)

mymsg.append(ex.Procedure)

mymsg.append(ex.Number)

msgbox(mymsg)

End Try

End Sub

It works as expected to this point. I can trap whatever error I need. What I want to do is get the error info back to the user so they can see what happened and why their record was not inserted. I'm stumped! THX

The Object Data Source control is a powerful and highly configurable control. You just have to wrap your heard around it. Click on the Object Data Source control then click on the yellow lighting bolt in the properties window. This will take you to the events. Double-click on the "Inserting" event. this will wire-up an event handler for this event.

This event will fire BEFORE the insert actually happens. Here you can test to see if a record already exists or some other problem that could prevent the insert. At this point you can cancel it (I think use e.Cancel = True) and inform the user if you need to.

But I would not use the try catch in this case.
