John has a point, you will miss changes in the standard skins and also if the there been updates in Links and Html modules. You also get all the latest releases for the other modules to install if you like. With the install package you have all modules but some of them may have been installed before.

I havent comparesd all procedures but I asume they are the same. If you do it Johns way be sure you save your old webconfig otherwise it will bee overwritten and you need too have the information from your old config machineKey and so on.

Personally I use the upgrade with upgrade just to be sure if some procedures have a difference. But usually I upgrade in small steps.

I have been working on this all day and finally got it to work.  Here is what I did.

  1. Original version 4.5.5.
  2. Upgraded to version 4.6 with the full install.  Used the 4.6 release.config, renamed it to web.config and copied the appropriate info.
  3. Got an "Object not set to an instance of an object" error.  Didn't try to fix it.
  4. Upgraded to version 4.6.2 using the Upgrade package.  Upgrade successful with no errors.  Error in step 3 went away.  Able to use site completely.
  5. Upgraded to version 4.7.0 using the Upgrade package.  Upgrade successful with no errors.  Able to use site completely.

FYI.  I did all of this on my local computer until I found a combination that worked.  I crashed my live site too many times and decided not to use it until I got the above solution.

Hope this helps.

  • you shall be able without issuesto upgrade directly from 4.5.5 to 4.7.0.
  • you can use either upgrade or install package, I prefer install package, because it contains all updated skins, modules and providers
  • if you use install package, be aware that your web.config file will get overwritten, you still need to copy over customisations manually
  • see here for a detailed upgrade check list: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx

I tried using the 4.7 upgrade from 4.5.5 and it failed.  I did finaly use the 4.7 Install package and it worked.

Suggestion to anyone is to perform you upgrades locally first before trying it on a live site.

Just my opinion.
