Hello, I just got into the world of DNN, and I have some learning curve issues.  I can't seem to (1) find the files in order to change them, (2) edit anything by logging into the site, as there are no tools, (3) update the version, 4.3.4, or (4) find really helpful information that's easy to get to in answer to any of these questions.  Some background: I am a volunteer with admin priviledges, the company I'm working for just wants me to fix their crappy intranet for use by employees, and I have no formal training in ASP .net.  Perhaps this project is just a way for me to spend every moment here freaking out about not be able to do anything about it, so I don't actually get anything done, but the company gets to sign off on some volunteer money.  The previous employee who put together the thing is gone, and didn't leave any info on how he put his whole thing together.  Any helpful insight?  Would it benefit me to just start the whole thing from scratch?  The ultimate result is an intranet with lots of little modules, allowing employees to change phone numbers, car pool information, and pertinent info to the company and goings on within the internal workings here.  If there is a way to start from nothing, I don't know how to begin the process.

If you login and are not able to edit anything, you either: (1) do not have admin or host priveleges; (2) need to switch to Edit mode.  The latter would be better in your situation.  If you see the control panel when you login, switch the mode up top to be "Edit" mode instead of View.

If your problem is #1, then you need to either get the login information of the previous guy, add the admin role to your login account, break into the host account that the previous person used.  The latter is the preferred option here, as you will need to have Host permissions to truly administrate this portal. Installing from scratch would solve everything, but would likely result in loss of content - unless you're an SQL wiz or create an install template.  I haven't had much good luck with the templates though.

The following links will assist you in breaking into the host account.  Most likely, the host account username is "host", but if the person was security conscience, the username will be different.

(There was another link that I used to have that allowed you to run a simple query on the database, but I cannot find it right now.)
