Stefan Cullmann wrote

  • a dnn installations contains of a set of modules
  • one dnn installation can setup mutiple portals
  • each portal can listen to multiple hostheaders/domains
  • each portal can use every module (*)
  • (*) host can limit modules to certain portals
  • each data is private per portal, a module of portal A can not access data from portal B

so....sorry

is simple terms are you saying its not possibe?

one domain = one portal

the modules are the standard components for the portal - text area etc = the data within the module, in this case (text area) the text,  is private. Therefore you cant share the data within a module and a seperate instance has to be created per portal?

Sorry about that. In my first reply I was referring to doing things way out of the box....

Standard it is as Stefan (the other one) sais: data (module content) cannot be shared across portals.

That's why the option of putting everything inone portal could be an option for you. You can manage to have all portals appear to be seperated, but I would require some advanced configuration.

Sorry if I caused confusion there.

No problem stefan my low knowledge of DNN doesnt create great  questions. :D

So if i add all my domains to one portal will they be a subdomain of the main one?

eg http://www.coredomain.com/subdomain/default.asp

I'm not sure how this case would affect my SEO rating for each one - but at the same time hosting from the same IP is going to be an issue - i think my primary concern is the easy update and management of multiple domains.

shared modules in a common pool accessible from multiple domains - CSS to change appearance - DB driven content and references to images etc

any suggestions?

I am considering a bespoke application $$$$$ :(

Not really, your domains can have their own domain names (www.domain.com), subdomain names (sub.domain.com) or virtual folder (www.domain.com/folder) and all be served from the same portal in DNN. Like I said, with some advanced configuration you can make sure you can:

  • make users think it's all separated websites, and
  • share modules between them

But really, it will be quite advanced. You would probably need some help (or time) to get it done.

Stefan,

As far as CMS, DNN is the best i have seen so i will consider the options. The cost of a bespoke application will dictate how i progress from here.

Many thanks for your help and responses to my questions

Have a great weekend

Regards
