Hi Austin,
here's how we do at www.dnaxp.net.

  • Download the source package of DNN
  • Configure the directory security and web.config
  • Run the installation process of DNN opening the site URL (eg. http://localhost/yoursite)
  • Close the browser and open the DotNetNuke Solution with VS 2005
  • Add to the solution your module project (ReportGrid in this case)
  • Fix the reference of the module to point to the "DotNetNuke.Library". We select this from the Projects tab in the "Add Reference" dialog.
  • Choose for the newly reference NOT to Copy the file locally (CopyLocal = False)
  • Add a reference to your website to the module (ReportGrid in this case)
  • Run a build all

If everything is ok, you can now upload the module PA in order to register the module under your portal.
Press the "Play" button and start debugging.

Kind Regards,
D.

Thanks for the reply...

Ok I will give it a shot... this point here

  • Add to the solution your module project (ReportGrid in this case)

How does one go about doing this?  Do I need to put the source files into the desktopmodules directory of the source install or can I extract them some other place... essentially where do I put the source files?

If you get a minute a screen recording video of this would be a very nice addition to your website.

Also why is it that I need the full source?  Most DNN info says just use the install package... I want to understand the why behind it not just what to do.

Thanks

These steps do not make sense to me.. can you please clarify

  • Fix the reference of the module to point to the "DotNetNuke.Library". We select this from the Projects tab in the "Add Reference" dialog.
  • Choose for the newly reference NOT to Copy the file locally (CopyLocal = False)

    I am also confused here...

If everything is ok, you can now upload the module PA in order to register the module under your portal.
Press the "Play" button and start debugging.

When I add the module how does DNN know to use the one that is in the project folder not the one that is in the DesktopModules folder.. the PA one?

Do you think maybe it would be possible to post a screen recording of the steps you would go through to make this work?  It would be very helpful.
    Thanks
