Hi,

I recenly started working on a project and need to install a local installation of the live web site. I have followed the following steps. Tell me if I have missed something

1.) entered a HTTP alias in the live site that goes like localhost/virtual directory

2.) made a backup of SQL server 2005

3.) copied the files from the server.

4.) cretaed a new user and restored the database

5.) chnaged the web.config

6.) created a virtual directory and chnaged permissions to the folder for ASPNET machine account and NETWORK SERVICE.

7.) I know type http://localhost/virtualdirectory and get

HTTP 401.3 - Access denied by ACL on resource
Internet Information Service

Any help will be greatly appreaciated.... Thanks

Did you set the permissions for the ASPNET or NETWORK SERVICE account on the live server?

Also, this is a pretty good reference:

I forgot to add that you would use the NETWORK SERVICE account for Windows 2003 Server, otherwise use the ASPNET account.  The site should have read, write, and modify permissions.

What about the account that is running the ANONYMOUS web browsing in IIS?  Typically, this is the IUSR_<MACHINENAME> account.  Do your web site directories and files have that account added?  The IUSR account should have read, write, execute file permissions.

You would change this in the properties dialog for the virtual directory and/or site that the problem is occurring on.  Go to the Directory Security tab, and then click on the Edit button.  This will show you the account that is being used for Anonymous access to your web site.

Then, change the permissions for the directories to include the account you found in the previous step.
