We've been reviewing a lot of the Wiki documentation in the "Dummies" book and elsewhere.  In our install we have version 04.00.01.  And we keep running into some more fundamental issues that we need to get working to our needs. Here are a couple of the bigger roadblocks we are having to making this module really sing.

1. It seems we are missing a lot of the functions for readers, editors, and administrators (e.g. in no particular order like the door, raking, mychanges, view button, backlinks, diffs, minor changes, etc.) that should be there, unless they were omitted from this module in comparison to earlier versions?!

2. Another bigger one is, we would like to have a way to just let someone click make a new topic without having to [[embed]] it in an existing topic. Is this possible?  Would be great!

3. We want to be able to have more controls over topics in the wiki than a "registered user" editor.  For example, registered users can delete a post AND all its history, presumeably requiring the administrator to restore a previously backed up.  There are reference to "maintenance button" but we can't for the life of us find where this is.

4. And on a related point, we need to be able to back the wiki up and/or export it.  Primiarily for the purpose of being able to restore a given topic without having to go back and restoring the entire dbase to the last previous back up point.

Maria, the biggest issue you'll find is that the Wiki module reviewed in the DNN Dummies book is not the module that is currently available for download. Earlier this year we switched to another Wiki platform that unfortunately didn't have the same features as the original module that was released as a Beta. This module though was more stable and better fit the DNN model of development. There will be a new release coming out shortly that addresses quite a few issues, though only has a few new features. For 2008 we hope to ramp up development on the module and add new features such as backlinks, wiki words, diffs, etc.

As for #2, that should be addresses in this next release, though once you create a new item it won't be available except in the index, so I'm trying to figure out how to address that.

We'll be addressing backup, permissions, and a lot of other new features in the coming releases, so please stay tuned.

There has been talk before but not much discussion on this, if there is a business willing to sponsor development of specific features the project can be accellerated as it would allow for some paid for development rather than the offtime development that it currently gets. I'm sure me stating that will ruffle some feathers, but the truth of the matter is that many of the projects are able to support this model, it's just not promoted. If any business is interested in such modifications please feel free to contact me at chris.hammond@dotnetnuke.com and I can work with the Corporation to get the details ironed out.

Awesome response Chris, much appreciated, makes things very clear going forward.  Fair comment about development on the wiki module and timing, we are keen to stay tuned on this.  And if we need to accelerate timing, we appreciate knowing about the option.  This is a bit side-of-the-desk for us now, but look forward much to the new release!

On the "create a new topic" thing from a design POV, if you're saying that such a new topic is available in the index only and not searchable, that is a big limitation. But if its in the index and searchable, that is great.  Searchability (and findability) is the key.

Search, I always forget about search :)

I meant it would be listed in the index, and should also be searchable, but wouldn't be linked to from another page in the Wiki
