I am new the DNN. I have inherited a DNN website, and need guidance on how to proceed. Currently the site is not using AD authentication. Accounts are added to the portals by the admin. THere are only a handful of users. THere is one event registration module running using xmod. Currently the site is not using AD authentication. Accounts are added to the portals by the admin. The site says DNN version 04.03.07. I have been asked to enable AD authentication. What is my best course of action? Is AD authentication incuded in this version? If not, should I install a third party Authentication or upgrade to the latest verion on DNN? Which way would be the safest without messing up any of the portals? If I must use a thrid party module, which one for my version? Is it possible the enable AD authentication without the curent user accounts losing access? ANy guidance, suggestions or URLs would be appreciated.

Hi Jim

Yes Authentication is included in 4.3.7 (Admin->Authentication to enable it). At that point it was part of the core code. I can't remember if there were any extra issues with 4.3.7 but if you look at the AD Fix on http://dnn.gmss.org it'll give you an idea of what's fixed and decide if you need it. I never posted one for 4.3.7 as that version was followed very quickly by 4.4.0 (before I had time to release one). I do have a version of the fix for 4.3.7 if you decide you need it.

As for the steps to set it up I would look at this post (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/89/threadid/141701/scope/posts/Default.aspx) for the setup steps.

As far as upgrading goes....that's up to you. Personally I'd upgrade to 4.5.5 at the absolute minimum and wouldn't have any qualms about going up to 4.6.2. I've been pretty tied up the last couple weeks and haven't been paying attention to any 4.7.0 issues outside of what concerns the AD provider. As always when upgrading, make sure you've got a backup of the site and the database before doing the upgrade in case things go wrong. Testing on a mirror copy of the production site is always a good bet (a copy of the site and database on a development computer).

Thanks Mike,

What about the Non-AD user accounts? Will they continue to work?

I have followed the instructions on the links you posted. However i get the following:

Accessing Global Catalog:
FAIL
Checking Root Domain:
FAIL
Accessing LDAP:
FAIL
Find all domains in network:
Could not access LDAP to obtain domains info
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

I am following the instruction in the exact order they are written. Therefore I have not changed IIS. I have not uncommented the line in the web.config. At this point I am only trying to enable the Windows Authentication in DNN.

Windows Authentication?: Checked
Synchronize Role?: Checked
Provider: ADSIAuthenticationProvider
Authentication Type: Delegation
Root Domain: DC=MYDOMAIN.EDU
User Name: MYDOMAIN.EDU\USERNAME
Password: **************
Email Domain: @mydomain.edu

I created a user in AD with read permissions. I'm AD retarded. Is there something special about this account?
