Seems like I got something here.

I did an install of the install version, which ran just fine. Then I looked at the changes between the web.config of the source en and the install versions on my machine. One of the differences was the trust level:


    <!-- set code access security trust level - this is generally set in the machine.config
    <trust level="Medium" originUrl=".*" />
     -->

This line was not commented out in the source version. Changed that and it runs. I don't know yet wh the underlying problem is, but I'll get that sometime...

It turned out I needed to install Common HTTP Features (from within "Turn Windows Features On or Off") and enable windows authentication (from within IIS Manager) to run without uncommenting the trust element in web.config.

oh well... IIS7 will be fully supported in DNN 4.8 they say...
