I'm looking into using DNN but I would like to know about upgrades. How easily is it to upgrade DNN software from previous versions? What kind of common pitfalls should I avoid when using DNN as far as upgrades are concerned?

Upgrades are fairly easy but then I've been doing them since DNN 1.0.6.

I generally do the following when upgrading DNN or upgrading a module, or adding a new module:

  1. Back up the database and the website
  2. If using the Update version of the Core I copy the files overtop of the current version.
  3. If using the Install version of the Core I rename the web.config and then copy the files over the old version.
  4. If I used the update version then I use a program called WinMerge and compare the release.config with the old web.config and copy the connection strings, machine keys, and any other custom changes I've made from the web.config to the release.config. I then rename the web.config to something else and rename release.config to web.config.
  5. If I used the Install version then I use WinMerge and compare the new web.config to the old renamed web.config and do the same as in step 4.
  6. Launch site and cross my fingers.
