Hello.  If anyone has experience or suggestions for this idea, please post a reply.

We are converting our existing Cold Fusion site to DNN (4.5.5 currently), and we need to store some extra administrative data.  As I see it, we have 3 basic choices: (1) build a custom data source outside DNN (SQL, XML, etc.), (2) build custom tables in the DNN SQL database, or (3) use User Defined Tables with admin-only permissions.  I'm leaning toward using UDT, because of the following reasons:

  • One line of code to get data (Dim ds As DataSet = udtCtrl.GetDataSet(ModuleID))
  • Easy sorting and filtering with Sort and RowFilter properties on the dataset
  • UDT gives you an easy GUI to manage the table and the data
  • UDT has granular permissions for multiple website/content administrators
  • UDT is core DNN, so upgrades would hopefully not be a problem

Does anyone think using UDT for storing administrative data is a good thing or a bad thing (upgrade problems, migration problems, etc.)?  Does anyone have experience using UDT for this kind of thing?

Thanks!

I don't see a security issue in DNN, its store is as secure as any other DNN data. Of course, if you need to access data from other modules, you should use BCL instead of directly accessing the database, which is subject to change (though there may be BCL changes in future UDT versions as well).
