I have been fuddling my way through building a website on a laptop for evaluation purposes. I now have a pretty workable site structure built up, but I have a long way to go before I understand all the modules, roles, permissions, and whatnot. This really is an incredible architecture. Last night I added a forum module to a page on the site, wow. I am absolutely speechless. That is a very nice module. I spent a good chunk of the evening trying to break it, and I couldn't! If you recall, I have managed to break everything else, even a skin. That is the feature that is going to help me convince the club to go to this architecture.
I have almost every technical feature they have asked for worked out in DNN. I also have not had to spend a nickel, though that will change. On the site I now have a way to sort, display and search hundreds of active members through their names, cities, the year, options, and generation of theri Camaro(s). I have a way to display their pictures, tell their stories (and I think I could let them tell their own stories easily), and also do all the same for the 20 or so club events each year. I have the weather on every page!!!!! (have not been able to get that working on our current website) I have a small calander on every page referenced to a large on on a Schedule of Events page. I can randomly flip club sponsor pictures on every page, I can control access to certain pages/ features/ links with a login account. I can display maps to events (yeah goMap), as well as display youTube movies, external websites, and I can even display some of our current flash. With DNN designer, I can even make changes to the pages without knowing anything about CSS or skin objects.
There are several things I still don't truly understand yet (like building a store), and bit to do before we take it live, but the forum module that came with 4.7 is the icing on the cake! With a few of the commercial modules out there (which really are not expensive), I know I can build a very respectable, profesional website, but I will simulate the functions with freebies for now. Thank you everyone for all your hard work!
