OK - Now I have upgraded to 4.8 and still have the same problem.  Site search dumps users to the main page of the site.  I'm happy for all of you that have working search engines, but could anyone shed any light on why mine is not working?

Fritz,

make sure, there is only a single instance of the searchResults module in your portal including the recycle bin.

Besides try to clear the search index and rebuild it, see http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/134/Default.aspx

Thanks Sebastian.  I ran the SQL thing to no avail.  I have searched the drive that hosts my DNN installation for the SearchResults with these results:

SearchResults.ascx  in \admin\search

SearchResults.ascx.vb in \admin\search

SearchResults.ascx.resx in in \admin\search\App_LocalResources

SearchResults.ascx in \DesktopModules\admin\Search

SearchResults.ascx.vb in \DesktopModules\admin\Search

SearchResults.ascx.resx in \DesktopModules\admin\Search\App_LocalResources

Do all of these belong?  I will have our server admin check the recycle bin on that computer.

one of both (admin/search or DesktopModules/search) is out of date and can be deleted.

What I meant was not the file, but the module reference in the portal (stored in the database). Clear the recycle bin, to make sure, there is no instance of the searchResults module inside. Place only a single one on a single page of your portal.

OK - we may not be on the same page here.  I am talking about the default search in the standard DNN blue skin, not the Search Results module that I can choose to add to my site.  I want to get the default site search working.

Thanks for going the extra mile with me on this.
