If I have an insall of DNN and i have a portal www.mydomain1.com and another portal (parent) www.mydomain2.com how complex is it to create a second install of DNN and move www.mydomain2.com to this as a portal?

I am guessing the site bit is easy, but is there a nice way to export the db to another?

Also, another quick one.  Does anyone have any benchmarks on the difference in performance between running DNN sites as single install/portal/database per site vs one shared install and database with many portals?

I have a lot of sites to put on and am debating whether one install on a farm would be better than multiple instances.

Hi,

These are the steps I use.

  1. Add the url of the site you are going to put the copy on as a Portal Alias, otherwise you won't be able to access the site.
  2. Create an empty database to support your second site
  3. Backup your database, and restore to the empty database. Add the user that you specify in your web.config to the database with DBO permissions. - There are otherways of copying the database, but I'm old fashioned, and this is what I do.
  4. Copy your complete directory structure intact to the second server.
  5. Modify your web.config to point to your restored database.
  6. Access your second site, and wait for application to fire up.

Job done.

Cheers
Roger

Thanks for the reply
I would have two identical databases then (though each will be then only handle the portal information after that).  I had already thought of that and was wondering if there was a way of exporting to the other database just the one set of data.

Think i will look at it slow time (no need for it just yet) and see what i can come up with.
